Regenerating the Pedagogical Garden in rural Italy
Description: Movesi is a NGO operating since Jan. '23, in a rural internal area near Salerno. It is a cross-municipal organisation working on local community development with a focus on rural areas and internationalisation. The main mission of Movesi is “facilitating movements”: generating fluxes of people and ideas to ignite processes of change in territories where many have lost hope and opportunities. The main mission of Movesi is to reconnect, stimulate and empower local communities by creating opportunities and by fostering activism among youngsters, municipalities, CSOs and entrepreneurs. One of the main activities of Mòvesi is the "Giardino Pedagogico: Mimí e Peppino". This garden is imagined as a community space that can host different activities for different beneficiaries.
Type of Work: The activities will be in the Pedagogical Garden. We have an aerea dedicated to the proper garden, an area for gatherings, a storage area, a tent and a recently planted food forest. However, over time, a lot of waste materials have accumulated and a lot of grass has covered our food forest. Having lacked possibility to maintain it, the Garden has lost a bit of its initial charm. Planned activities are:
- general cleaning of the area and re-organisation of different spaces;
- maintenance of our toolshed and of our teepee (big tent);
- classification of the plants on the Garden;
- cleaning the food forest from invasive plants;
- finalising existing walking pathways and water lines
- maintenance of plants in the food forest;
- helping in the organisation of one event with activities.
Study Theme: The study part of the camp will entirely focused on permaculture. Since we have expert trainers in the topic, we can address it from different points of view.
- what is permaculture? Ethics and Principles;
- Principles of Design in Permaculture (case study of food forest in Buccino/Morigerati);
- Community Gardening;
- Food forest design.
Accommodation: Participants will sleep in the house we use for hosting our activities. It has a kitchen, one dining room, one living room, two bathrooms with showers and four rooms where volunteers sleep together. No sleeping bags or mattresses are needed, but towels, working shoes, clothes and gloves are. The house is provided with WiFi (at least in common areas). Participants have their own fully equipped kitchen where they can prepare and consume meals. We do not exclude that some other hosts may visit the house in the same period. Added value could be if participants bring their driving licence.
Notes: Please kindly note that there is an additional incoming fee of 50 Euros for all volunteers applying through Partner organisations or Contacts of the SCI network. Check the status here: https://bit.ly/3vhBD5J. This fee covers hosting costs, insurance, a small travel fund to enable disadvantaged volunteers to join projects and administration costs.
